    H.O.R.S.E Introduction

H.O.R.S.E is not a game to be taken lightly; it's very existence is owed to the necessity of providing a greater challenge to those who are familiar and quite possibly very skilled at a number of poker variations. If you can imagine a theoretical situation in which you are hosting a high stakes tournament between a group of distinguished poker professionals, you may well want to be able to test their abilities beyond their skill in just one game. They may well be a superstar at Texas Hold'em but can they cope with Omaha; perhaps they are unbeatable at Seven Card Stud but how's their Razz?

The solution which was devised not too many years ago was to introduce a game which involved playing five different styles of poker on a rotating basis in one game. It's a slightly forced acronym but H.O.R.S.E was the result and the poker variants it represents are as follows:
H - Texas Hold'em : the all conquering poker variant for some decades now, online as well as offline. It has been the game of choice for the Main Event at the WSOP since that tournaments inception. O - Omaha Eight or Better: a variant of the always popular Omaha poker in which two hands can win each round - a high ranking hand and a low ranking hand. R - Razz: this is the game which can catch newcomers out and the rotating nature of H.O.R.S.E means that players must concentrate when switching to Razz. This is because winning hands are low cards - the best possible hand is Ace, 2, 3, 4, and 5. S - Seven Card Stud: one of the oldest poker variations and still a popular game which has been revitalised somewhat by the online poker revolution. E - Seven Card Stud Eights or Better: a more refined version of Seven Card Stud and also known as Hi-Lo. The aim of the game is to get the best high hand or the best low hand and serious concentration is required.

It's easy to see that playing H.O.R.S.E is a feat of concentration which requires complete mastery of a set of diverse poker variations. After a four hour session imagine how difficult it becomes to swap smoothly from Omaha to Razz and then back to Seven Card Stud. For this reason playing H.O.R.S.E for money is generally restricted to very experienced players. This also has the interesting consequence of making many games extremely high stakes events. If you don't want to go to the casinos to play, you can play freerolls and low stakes games online.

The World Series of Poker has been running a H.O.R.S.E tournament for some years now and recently the name has been changed to reflect the skill of the players. It's now known as the World Series of Poker Championship Event. Enjoy legendary poker pro Chip Reese's 2006 victory below:
