Craps Rules

Although Craps seems to be a rather complex game at the first glance, the truth is that you will learn it pretty fast as soon as you have understood the basic rules. Here we will try to illustrate the game as simple as possible and show you what you should do and what you should not. Probably you should visit a local Casino and observe the people playing at the Craps table – or you could practice for free in an Online Casino. After reading this article you should be able to enter into a running Craps game and make an appropriate bet.

First, you should know about Craps is that you can bet whether the shooter is making a “point” or not. You will be with the Shooter, if you believe that he will roll a point and you will bet against him if you think that he will not make one. The Shooter then rolls two six-sided dices from one end of the Craps table to the other side. In most of the Casinos it is the rule that this throw must be strong, so that the dices rebound. In this way it should be avoided that “Throwing artists” gain an unfair advantage (which means to throw the dice in a certain way so that a particular number will be rolled more frequently than the normal winning chances would conclude).

In order to make a „pass“ bet with the shooter place your wager on the “pass” line. You have to place your bet before the Shooter threw the dices- The “pass” line is the thick stripe which runs outside the table layout. The line is usually indicated by the capital letters “PASS LINE”. However, if you want to bet against the shooter, you have to place your wager on the “don’t pass” line. As you might have assumed, this line runs along the inner side of the “pass” line and it is considerably narrower.

You make simple „pass“bet in the following way: you place your wager on the „pass“line before the shooter throws the dices. So, you place your chips simply in the middle of the thick “pass” line which is labelled as such. You win, if the shooter throws a 7 or 11. However, if he throws a 2,3 or 12, you loose. If the shooter throws any other number, then this number becomes the point. When you are betting on the shooter, you will hope that this (point) number will show up again before the shooter rolls a 7. When the shooter throws a 7 before the point number come up, than you and the shooter have lost. This process starts once more, as soon as the shooter rolls either a 7 or a point.

When the shooter rolls the dices for the first time, players hope that he throws a 7 or 11 (“natural”) because this means that the players win immediately. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12, it is bad for them because in most cases they will loose. The good thing about Craps is that you can enter the game at any time.

If the player has made a “pass” bet and the shooter has rolled a point, you can make an additional bet, the so-called “odds bet”. This is offered by the bank for a fair rate – without the house edge. You place this additional wager right underneath your original bet (to be more precise: one half above the lower bar of the “pass” line and the other half on it). Most American Casinos offer “double odds”, which means that you can place for your odds bet up to the double amount of your original bet. Furthermore, if you have bet on „don’t pass“and the shooter has rolled a point you can also place an extra bet for a fair rate. If you have understood all of this, you are ready to get to know the game.

There are some more bets – here is a quick overview:

Come and Don’t come bets: The bets on “come” and “don’t come” are like the bets on “pass” and “don’t pass”. The only difference is that you can make a bet on the latter ones before the come out roll of the shooter, whereas you can bet on the former ones whenever you want.

One roll bets (or Proposition bets): Here you have several groups you can bet on and you make a wager on a particular outcome (which you think will be the result in the next roll). However, we should warn you because these bets are usually not in the player’s favor.

Place bets and Buy bets: Here, you bet on a particular number which should be rolled before the next seven shows up. In most American Casinos the place bets will not be determined by the come out roll of the shooter, which means that they are “off” (i.e. if the rolls a 7 in the come out roll, the place bets do not loose; if in the come out roll your number is thrown, you will not win.) After the come out roll the place bets will be “on” again (i.e. they are valid and they can either win or loose). The buy bets are almost identical to the place bets; here you can buy fair payout rates in return for a payment of a “5% commission”.

If you are planning to visit a real Casino in the near future, you should take a class on Craps which us usually offered in most Casinos. The more people know how to play the game, the better – therefore it should be no problem to find a Casino which offers free classes on Craps. But you have also the opportunity to play in an Online Casino. In this case, the Internet will serve you as the best studying resource – and this website should be your starting point.

Basically the only difference between playing Craps in a Casino (land-based or Online) and playing it at home with friends is that you are not playing against the other players but against the Casino – which makes for the player no big difference. The payout is also the same – 1:1, with a 1,41% advantage for the bank.
