  • Jonathan Epstein Fails In Ladies Only Event

The 2011 World Series of Poker is gradually drawing to a close. We still have several events to play, including the Main Event, but this tournament can certainly be counted as a success. Entrant numbers have remained steady and the spectators have also turned out in force. The Jonathan Epstein episode demonstrates just how competitions can fall foul of sexual equality laws.

The Ladies Only events are supposed to be events to encourage women to enter Poker tournaments. They work in that far more women turn up to play in these competitions than in ones open to everyone. However the law dictates (and rightly so) that neither sex can be discriminated against, meaning that completely against the spirit of the event, men can enter. Whether Epstein thought he could grab an easy win or whether was just making some sort of point, he's failed on both counts.

He was knocked out in ninth place, maybe not a bad finish but nothing approaching an easy win. Plenty of men have entered ladies only events previously, so there's hardly a point to be made there. Most importantly however, and something that may become more common, was the incessant booing that greeted Epstein's every move. If there's one thing that's going to dissuade men from pulling this stunt in the future, it's a constant barrage of abuse from the audience.

Perhaps those partaking in the booing have taken a leaf out of the books of the British supporters who, in the early stages of the tournament, chanted and shouted their way around as succession of young British players won bracelets. One would imagine Epstein won't be trying a stunt like this again. He's only a young player himself and won't want to continue making a bad name for himself at this early stage of his career.
