The headline could also quite easily read 'Las Vegas Strip Heading for Spain' because if Sheldon Adelson gets his way that's exactly where this monster development is going to end up. At a recent press conference held at the Marina Bay Sands resort and hotel complex in Singapore, Adelson, the chairman of Las Vegas Sands (of whom Marina Bay is a subsidiary) outlined his vision to create what he calls 'Euro-Vegas' in Spain. Essentially it will be a strip of several casinos on one big patch of land.
Las Vegas Sands has been buoyed by the success of the Marina Bay development – so much so that they are already in talks to extend the resort. Now Adelson wants to come to Europe. He has specified either Barcelona or Madrid for the gigantic development. Huge numbers are currently being bandied about by all sources but it appears that this whole project will cost around $20 billion (that's billion – with a 'b'). It should also create 180,000 jobs and, when finished, 20,000 hotel rooms.
There will be some hurdles to overcome – firstly the intense and historic rivalry between Barcelona and Madrid should both want the project. Secondly a development of this nature is going to need buy-in from government departments galore. Planning permission will be tough and so will the logistics of attempting to complete the various casinos at the same time. But Adelson now has experience of the latter at least and reportedly has already been in contact with several architects and developers.
Las Vegas based LV Air will later this year start to run a shuttle service between New York's JFK airport and Vegas' McCarran airport. Vegas can no longer rely on its name alone to attract tourists as domestic and international competition hots up so the casinos and airlines are looking at ways to encourage tourism.
It is expected that casinos will bulk buy seats on the new airline to offer free to their biggest spenders and may also promote package tours for New York residents. The service will begin in the summer and will offer four flights a day initially.
