Staying in the UK and the Gambling Commission, the body which has been formed by the merger of the previous Commission and the National Lottery Commission has appointed Philip Graf as its Chairman Designate.
This body regulates all commercial gambling in the UK and so is of particular interest to online operators. Posts such as these are chosen by the relevant government minister and it’s the job of the Tourism and Heritage Departments Minister John Penrose to perform this task. He has some experience in online regulation - in 2003 he was asked by the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to review the BBC’s online activities.
Online betting has long been something of a non-issue in Holland - the state owns all avenues into the gambling industry but it appears that this is set to end. In 2015 the state will effectively open up the monopoly to interested parties and in the process privatise the whole sector.
The reasons for doing this seem to be an effort to raise money for various causes and also a recognition that the state can never make as much money as the private sector (and therefore tax revenue). Dutch citizens can currently use international operators to place their bets or play poker.
