Jonathan Duhamel wins 2010 WSOP main event

This year's World Series of Poker main event has been won by Canadian Jonathan Duhamel. The 23 year old professional wins the title of 2010 World Champion and a total prize of $8,944,310. Duhamel overcame 7319 entries in this years competition which was held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Duhamel becomes the first Canadian to win a WSOP main event world championship. Canadians Tuan Lam and Howard Goldfarb have previously been runners up. He hails from Boucherville, Quebec, a town not far from Montreal. He has been a poker professional for three years but mostly plays online. After this world championship victory though, he says he plans to play more live competitions.

Duhamel's journey, and that of the other 7,319 competitors began on July 5th in the second largest event in WSOP main event history. The game was No-Limit Hold'em. By the last stage of the competition, the player numbers had been whittled down to nine, hence the November Nine stage. This final leg of the competition included no previous winners but some familiar names in the line up, Cuong Nguyen (9th), Matthew Jarvis (8th), Jason Senti (7th), John Dolan (6th), Michael Mizrachi (5th), Filippo Candio (4th), Joseph Choeng (3rd) and John Racener (2nd).

Jonathan Duhamel and John Racener comprised the final two players after the other seven had been eliminated. John Racener collected $5,545,955 for his second place – the biggest runner up prize in main event poker. Joseph Choeng collected $4,130,049 for third place and the prize money for the November Nine bottomed out at $811,823 for Cuong Nyugen. In total there were 747 cash prizes for the placed players.

This is the 41st year this prestigious event has taken place and it continues to grow annually, largely as a result of the boom in online poker. As mentioned previously Duhamel comes from an online background and the ages of the final table players – all 29 or younger – suggests he is not the only one. For comparison the average age across the whole tournament was 37 years.

This event is also one of the eleven gold bracelet events on the WSOP tour. The jewel encrusted bracelet is passed on from one winner to the next and last year's winner Joe Cada presented Jonathan Duhamel with this trophy.
