  • Online Growth Steady But Less Than Forecast

A percentage increase of 4.4% is an annual growth level most countries would be quite happy with at the moment so it is a bit surprising that this prediction has been met with a little disappointment. H2 Gambling Capital is a company which for twelve years has been supplying data and statistical analysis for the casino and gambling industry and its original forecast of 10.2% has been significantly decreased.

In financial terms it equates to a revenue forecast of $23.76 billion from $25 billion but the drop can be explained fairly easily. Black Friday and Blue Monday have really out the dampeners on the American market. Pre-2006 and the UIGEA it held a disproportionately large share of the global market. It has struggled on since then but the latest set of indictments have hit the industry hard. Perhaps a dozen or so online poker sites have been banned and a number more have voluntarily removed themselves from the market. URLs have changed from .com to .eu, .co.uk and .info among others.

Less well known is the effect the Japanese earthquake and tsunami have had on global gaming revenues. The Japanese Racing Industry is the largest interactive operator in the world, via dedicated terminals and increasingly mobile networks. The destruction Japan suffered had a major effect on all businesses, not just the online racing industry. In the immediate aftermath, the mobile networks were reserved for emergency use.

Nevertheless the industry is still growing and several new European markets will open up shortly, efficiently regulated and forecast to provide billions of Euros of revenue for the partaking countries. Italy's gaming industry will go online this summer and 2012 will see Belgium, Greece and Spain join the party. With the exception of Belgium, all these countries badly need an injection of tax revenue. Greece in particular is currently on the verge of bankruptcy.
