When we talk about poker in the online casino industry these days we are usually talking about Texas Hold'em. If you're looking for online games at any time of the day or night, in more or less any country around the world, Texas Hold'em is the game which will not let you down.
It has been the bedrock of the World Series of Poker since the tournament began more than forty years ago and has featured repeatedly in the WSOP Main Event. It's original appearance in this competition is not surprising - the original players were a handful of invitees from the Southern states and Texas in particular. There's not even much argument as to where Texas Hold'em originated - the Texas State Assembly records Robstown in Texas as its birthplace
So why is it so popular? As with all poker games it's a combination of skill and luck, mixed with the appropriate amount of bluff. It's a community card game meaning that players share the use of five face up cards on the table. If the game reaches the showdown before the community cards have been drawn, Texas Hold'em can generate a level of excitement not normally seen in poker games as the flop. the turn and the river are drawn.

Back to basics first though and a brief guide to the rules and terminology. It's usually played with between two and nine players and each player acts as the dealer, the task rotating clockwise after every hand. Players are trying to obtain the best five card hand from the seven cards available to them - the cards in their hand and the community cards - or bluff the other players into thinking that's what they have. The dealer firstly deals two face down cards to each player and the player to the left of the dealer must bet the small blind. This is a small bet which is half the big blind. The big blind will be calculated as small percentage of the buy in for the game and will be laid by the next player.
The first round of betting now takes place and players can fold, call, check or raise as per general poker rules. If two or more payers are left in the game after this, the first three community cards are dealt. This is called the flop. Another round of betting now follows and again, if two or more players are left in the game, a fourth community card - the turn - is dealt. There's another round of betting followed by a fifth community card, the river, then a final round of betting before the showdown where the winner will be revealed. Winnings hands are judged by standard poker hand rankings.
