  • Washington D.C. Ready To Start Online Gaming

It's a small step but a welcome one for poker players and indeed any fans of online gaming in Washington D.C. The bill to legalise online wagering in that state has been carefully planned and implemented and now it is about to become reality. In late July anyone living in the state who would be allowed to gamble under normal circumstances, will be eligible to sign up to the new facility.

Because of the global online focus towards poker, we tend to disregard blackjack somewhat, but it will be one of the first games available, along with poker and the state Lottery. blackjack remains immensely popular but does struggle somewhat for publicity against the might of the World Series of Poker, the World poker Tour and Texas Hold'em.

Real money gaming won't be available until September 7th but if you are a resident of Washington D.C. you can gamble with 'play money' during the initial test period. It will be interesting now to see where this small step will lead, other states have considered the idea - Iowa, Nevada, Florida and New Jersey to name a few - but Washington is the first to take the plunge. If other states lag behind Washington, or if the federal bills currently on the table fail to have any impact, will we see the poker pros moving to Washington en masse?

It's probably a little early to tell but one way or another this is a game changer - by September there will be a location on the American mainland where it won't be impossible to play a game of poker or blackjack for money. It may also add momentum to the efforts currently underway to introduce federal bills. What would be the point of denying the bill if individual states can go ahead and do what they want anyway? Anyhow, it's all good news for pokerand blackjack players, especially if you live in Washington D.C.
